Unismuh Architecture Students Develop Educational Design Program in Southern Thailand Schools

UNISMUH.AC.ID, YALA, Southern Thailand — Architecture students from the Faculty of Engineering at Muhammadiyah University (Unismuh) Makassar, Rezqi Ayu Amaliyah Syam, developed an educational program in a partner school during the 2nd Batch of the International Community Service (KKN) program in Southern Thailand. June 8, 2026.

The program was implemented at THAWEEWUT CHITPHAKDI C&E SCHOOL, Yala, Southern Thailand, as part of Unismuh Makassar students' efforts to apply their knowledge in an international environment.

The 2nd Batch of the International KKN program involved 30 Unismuh Makassar students, 11 of whom were from the Faculty of Engineering. They comprised four Architecture students, four Computer Science students, two Water Resources students, and one Electrical Engineering student.

At the service location, Rezqi collaborated with Wafiq Azizah, a Computer Science student. Together, they implemented a program focused on developing learning and educational activities in the school environment.

During the first week, they underwent an adaptation period, observed the school environment, and coordinated with the headmaster and partner teachers to align the work program. This stage was crucial for understanding the school's needs and determining relevant contributions based on their respective fields of study.

As an Architecture student, Rezqi designed an educational program that introduced the concept of comfortable, healthy, and supportive learning spaces. Through this program, students were encouraged to understand the importance of the physical environment in supporting the learning process and the well-being of users of the space.

In addition to developing architecture-based programs, Rezqi also participated in Arabic language instruction, which was a need for the school. Meanwhile, Wafiq provided assistance in English language instruction.

Learning activities were conducted using an interactive approach through discussions, educational games, and simple communication practices. This method was designed to encourage active student participation and enhance their confidence in communication.

The materials covered during the first week included self-introduction, question phrases, and basic sentence structures. These materials were presented in an engaging manner, which received positive feedback from students and teachers.

The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Unismuh Makassar, Muhammad Syafaat S. Kuba, appreciated the involvement of the Engineering students in the International KKN program in Southern Thailand.

He stated that the program provided a platform for students to apply the knowledge they had gained during their studies in a global context.

"International KKN encourages students not only to adapt to a new culture but also to make a real contribution according to their field of expertise. This experience will strengthen the professional competence and international awareness of the students," he said.

Similarly, the Head of the Architecture Program at Unismuh Makassar, Citra Amalia Amal, believed that the involvement of students in international programs opened up opportunities for developing a global perspective in the field of design and built environment.

She stated that Architecture students not only learn about buildings and spaces but also understand how the environment is designed to meet human needs. The experience in Thailand was considered an opportunity for students to learn different approaches to space and culture, and to develop relevant solutions for the community.

The 2nd Batch of the International KKN program, managed by the Institute for Research, Development and Community Service (LP3M) of Unismuh Makassar, is part of the International Community Service scheme aimed at strengthening the global competence of students through community service across countries. Through this program, Unismuh Makassar continues to expand its international collaboration and encourages the contribution of universities to society and education.
