Unismuh Electrical Engineering Students Hold Telecommunications Workshop in Southern Thailand

UNISMUH.AC.ID, Southern Thailand — Students from the Electrical Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Muhammadiyah (Unismuh) Makassar, Ayu Andini, held a Telecommunications and Internet Workshop with the theme "Technology That Connects the World" at Darul Hikmah School, Narathiwat, Southern Thailand, as part of the International Community Service Program (KKN). The activity aimed to improve students' technological literacy by introducing basic telecommunications and internet concepts used in daily life.

The workshop was conducted interactively, combining the delivery of material, visualization of telecommunications systems, discussions, and educational quizzes. Through this approach, participants were encouraged to understand the principles of digital communication technology simply, while also promoting active participation during the activity.

Ayu Andini explained that the activity was a contribution from Unismuh Electrical Engineering students to broaden the understanding of young people towards digital technology. According to her, mastering basic telecommunications concepts is an important foundation so that students not only utilize technology, but also understand the underlying mechanisms.

"Through this workshop, we want to introduce the basics of telecommunications and the internet to students so that they not only become technology users, but also understand how the technology works and provides benefits for human life," said Ayu Andini.

In the first session, Ayu introduced the basic concepts of telecommunications as a technology that allows humans to send and receive information in the form of voice, text, images, videos, and digital data. She also explained various examples of telecommunications applications that are close to students' daily activities, such as the use of LINE, WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok, Zoom, and various other digital platforms.

"Telecommunication technology is present in almost all communication activities of people today. Therefore, it is important for students to understand that every digital application has a connected communication system," said Ayu when presenting the material to the participants.

In addition to providing theoretical explanations, Ayu also explained the main components of the telecommunications system, including the sender, transmission medium, and receiver. Through simple illustrations, students were guided to understand how information is transferred from one device to another through the communication network.

In the next session, participants received explanations about the workings of the internet, starting from the process of data transmission from a smartphone to the Base Transceiver Station (BTS), forwarded to the internet network until reaching the server, then back to the user's device. Ayu also explained the function of the BTS as a connector between devices and the cellular network, as well as the role of the server in storing and managing data from various digital applications.

"Understanding how the internet works will make students more wise in using technology and also realize that every digital communication process involves complex systems," said Ayu.

During the activity, the enthusiasm of the participants was evident through question and answer sessions and interactive quizzes. Many students asked questions about digital communication processes and were able to answer the questions after the material was presented.

Ayu said that the active response of the participants showed that interactive learning methods can improve students' understanding of the material. She also evaluated that the visual and discussion approach makes technical telecommunications concepts easier for students to understand.

According to Ayu, the workshop was also an implementation of Unismuh students' community service through the International KKN Program. She hoped that similar activities could expand students' technological knowledge and strengthen the educational relationship between Indonesia and Thailand through the exchange of knowledge.

The activity ended with a group photo session between the International KKN students of Unismuh and the students of Darul Hikmah School. Through this activity, the Electrical Engineering Department of the Faculty of Engineering, Unismuh Makassar, hopes that cross-country educational collaboration can continue to develop and strengthen efforts to improve digital literacy for young people at the international level.
